A Reason to Fight

戦う理由

Artoria:

So this is Fuyuki, the land that was the beginning of the Holy Grail War…
How terrible. This blaze will likely last for a decade or two.
The curses have tainted the earth itself. This is no longer a place fit for human habitation.

Dr. Roman:

Looks like it. Apparently, there was a similar town in America.
A sea of fire on the surface, while natural gas flooded the underground. They thought that it would burn for another fifty years or something.
Well, that was a man-made urban accident, but this is a magical disaster.

Artoria:

A magical disaster… What do you think of it, Master?

  1. It has to be the Holy Grail’s fault.
  2. It’s because this turned into a singularity.

[1] Artoria:

The Holy Grail was the cause… I wish it wasn’t the case, but I cannot deny the truth.

[2] Artoria:

You think this city changed not because of the Holy Grail, but because it has become a singularity?

Mash:

…Erm. You were the one protecting the Holy Grail here, Saber.
Specifically, it was another aspect of you. Do you remember anything?

Artoria:

…I apologize.
Heroic Spirits summoned as Servants are independent from their original forms.
Once the contract is void and we return to the Throne, our experiences are accumulated into our integrated records…
Right now, in my Saber class, I am as I was when I served as a king of knights.
Gudao, Mashu. Please consider my black-armored self a separate person.

Dr. Roman:

Yeah. The Heroic Spirit summoning system has both advantages and drawbacks.
While it can draw on various aspects of a Heroic Spirit, identical Heroic Spirits can even end up fighting themselves.

Artoria:

Thus, you can relax. My blackened self is of a different class, so it has no bearing on myself now.
I wield this sword to serve your purposes. I will never mistake that fact and attack you instead.

  1. That sounds promising.
  2. Of course, I trust you.

Artoria:

Yes. I am grateful, Master. Then, allow me to live up to that trust.

[monsters growl]

Mash:

That was a growl just now! Hostiles detected, Senpai!

Artoria:

This looks to be a good fighting experience. Come with me, Mash. I will instruct you in the ways of combat!

[battle]

Artoria:

You have a talent for it, as I expected. Mash will become a fine warrior, Gudao.
…Though, I suppose we’ll have to do something about your timidity next time.

Mash:

…I’m sorry. Fighting scares me.
Aren’t you afraid, Saber? You’re also a girl about the same age as me-

Dr. Roman:

Yeah, I was wondering about that too.
I was surprised to see that the legendary King Arthur was a girl, but what really surprised me was your strength.
I think Saber… Artoria’s Saint Graph is in the top class of Heroic Spirits.

Artoria. No, King Arthur. How is it that you fight without any doubt?
You went so far as to dress as a male and take the throne, unify Britain, and drive out foreign tribes.
I wonder about the reasons for such determination. What drove you onto the path you took?

Artoria:

…My reasons and my path? Well, my reasons aside, I can explain my path. I was born to punish the foolish kings before me… no, I was a child made for that purpose.
I believe the magic is known as Conceptual Fertilization.
My mother was impregnated with the concept of the Red Dragon that protects Britain, and she gave birth to me.
This is likely why the quality of my Saint Graph is so high. Later, I drew the sword that selected the king.
I was chosen by the sword, and was helped by Merlin, my successor and a most troublesome magus. Then, I received this holy sword from the Fairy of the Lake and came to rule Britain.
That is my past, just as it is in the legends.

I think everyone is just a bit confused about my gender. After all, it would have been more convenient to have a man ruling a kingdom.

  1. Wasn’t it hard?
  2. …Do you regret anything?

Artoria:

Of course. It was difficult, and I failed a great many times. No life is without hardship.
Yet, my life was a good one.
I made many wrong choices, yes. But at the very end, I came to understand something.
I hurt many things, and suffered a stunning defeat. Still, what is most precious to me is that I was able to protect it all until the end.

Mash:

………

[monster screech]

Artoria:

Good grief. This is no place for long discussions.
Your orders, Master. Let us cleanse a portion of the curses tainting this land!

[battle]

Artoria:

Thank you for hearing out my request to come see Fuyuki.
Let us return to Chaldea, Master. There are other things we must do now.

  1. You’re right.
  2. …Before that, one more thing.

Mash:

Wait, we haven’t finished our earlier conversation.

Artoria:

Yes, that’s true. I spoke of my path, but I haven’t addressed the reason I became a king.
The reason a young girl was crowned, and rode onto the battlefield. What did I fight for?
The answer was pure and simple. It was surely for the same reasons that you fight, Sir Gudao.
I did not fight for my ideals. I fought for the future.

The future is something that everyone wishes for. It is the most natural thing to desire. I took up my sword to defend that.
I cannot judge whether I succeeded or not, but I tried my utmost, and died for that dream.

Mash:

You mean you have no regrets for your end as King Arthur?

Artoria:

I have frustrations, but I regret nothing.
My battle was not so righteous that it could save everything — but I know now that that I was not wrong.
From now on, the battle belongs to you, Master. I swear on this holy sword that I will aid you.
